BTEC in Driving Science

BTEC in Driving Science qualification from 17 PlusA BTEC Intermediate Level is an academic qualification equivalent to GCSE level and is accredited by Edexcel. The BTEC in Driving Science addresses the importance of integrating the right attitude with car control skills. It also provides a comprehensive novice driver education programme which results in a more fully informed driver who has a full appreciation of all the factors that influence safety.

Why is the BTEC necessary?
Most people between 15 and 25 know at least one person who has been killed or badly hurt in a car crash and that’s not surprising as 1 in 5 new drivers will crash within a year of passing their test. The BTEC in Driving Science has been designed to make you a better driver from the very first lesson and ultimately far safer once you have passed your test.

How does it work?
The BTEC in Driving Science integrates with normal driving lessons and follows a structured driving curriculum encompassing the European Goals for Driver Education. The 5 unit syllabus covers the main aspects of driving and one of the units, which will include motorway driving, must be completed after passing a DSA practical test. Learning these advanced skills could enable students to be practical test ready sooner and also increase their chances of passing first time.

BTEC in Driving Science qualification from 17 PlusIs the BTEC a course or a test?
The BTEC is a course that ends with a qualification, so there must be some form of assessment. There are assessment tasks within each unit and these are either in-car with your driving instructor or online and can be taken when the student is ready. As it’s a course there are unlimited re-takes until the task is mastered.

How will it improve driver safety?
The frontal lobe of the brain doesn’t fully develop until the age of 25 and it is this part of the brain which controls impulse, emotion, risk management and eye movement. Added to the fact that 19 out of 20 crashes are down to poor attitude rather than driving technique it is clear that young drivers are most vulnerable. The BTEC in Driving Science has been structured to address these issues and accelerate the development of the frontal lobe, thus making younger drivers more competent and safer on the road.

How will it save money?

This will give all students access to special rates on car insurance, car hire and car finance through associated companies. Secondly, because of the accelerated learning, fewer lessons may be needed and a first time pass will be more achievable.
